INTRODUCTION
The illustrations used in Volume II depicted motive-power; no attempt was made to portray anything else. Consequently, this supplement contains essentially a pictorial presentation of the Rio Grande's trackage, including the adjacent scenery Ind landscape. Since they span almost a full century of elapsed time, the illustrations show the railroad at various uncorrelated points in the development of its physical embodiment, though in general they show a particular segment during its period of local activity.
It is interesting to speculate upon what preceded or followed the scenes which were chosen. In many instances there had been almost nothing excepting some superficial scratches upon the Earth's surface before the Rio Grande's iron horses whistled into sight. The picture might give every evidence of bustling industry and yet one might see nothing today at that same spot, save some heaps of a subject man-made debris and the faint traces of a long-vanished roadbed. Sometimes the arch the rails connected a small town with the outside world; today that town may be a great say that city, but all too often it has departed, having joined a long list of ghost-towns, which matter ti consist of a few ancient buildings and no inhabitants. Then there are instances where for hi' the scenery of today is almost identical with that of a century ago. The railroad came; a photo its trains passed by; and the railroad withdrew, leaving scant evidence of its temporary previously presence. It is not easy to comprehend how rapidly the cities have gobbled up the Charles previously empty areas which are now within their incorporated boundaries, nor is it up with any easier to realize how swiftly Nature has reclaimed land where once there had been Ir of hithriving community of several thousand souls. Perhaps the pictures will help. long his.
