Intro
The Clinchfield Railroad was not even a corporation. It was, instead, the operating name provided by lessees Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and Louisville & Nashville Railroad following their successful leasing of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railway Company in 1924. The CC&O was one of four major railroad projects completed in, the early 20th century by capitalists with both forward-looking vision and adequate resources to build well and to build completely. The result: a high capacity railroad that could be operated economically. Together with nearby Virginian Railway, distant Western Pacific and Arthur Stilwell's Kansas City Southern Railway, all were built or rebuilt at one time to the highest engineering standards of the day and equipped with the latest rolling stock. The CC&O was the last to be completed, on July 1, 1915.
