Introduction
The building of the Clinch Valley Line was a direct result of three factors. The first was the Norfolk & Western (N&W) Railroad's desire to expand into the southern Appalachian coalfields and build on the success it experienced in building the railroad to Pocahontas, Virginia. The second factor was the N&W's desire to have its own connection to the west, and not just be a bridge line between the north and south. The third factor was a concern about the stability of the railroad's connection at Bristol, Virginia with the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia (ETV&G) Railroad, after its repeated failed attempts to acquire the ETV&G.
Clinch Valley - Norfolk & Western District Line is not just about building the 99.7 mile railroad between Graham (Bluefield) and Norton, Virginia. The book is about decision making and risk taking. It is about success and failure, risk and reward, and it is about what was accomplished when the railroad was completed.
The book looks at the original route surveys, cost estimates, financing issues, and N&W contracting methods. The original objective was build the railroad and get it operational. About 15 years later the objective was to upgrade the railroad towards efficient operation. This required about 10 years of tunnel modernization and 20 years of bridge replacement.
The book also looks at the communities that came into existence because the railroad was built and the four major land and development companies that built Graham, Richlands, Coeburn and Norton. It also looks at the development of industry along the main line and the branch lines of the railroad.
This book only looks at the Clinch Valley Line as built and by the N&W. It does not go into the expansion of the railroad after the merger of the Norfolk & Western and the Southern. As of September 2014 the original N&W Clinch Valley Line and portions of Big Creek Branch and Dumps Creek Branch were still in service.
