Introduction
It is widely recognised that the railways of Britain are better documented than any other comparable home industry. The reasons for this are not hard to find, and certainly need no discussion here, but in this process it has been natural for the crack 'main line' concerns and minor railways of historical, technical or scenic fame to take the limelight. Just as some have been expatiated upon, others have been relatively ignored. This latter is surely true of the Cleobury Mortimer and Ditton Priors Light Railway. Yet its career, if not exceptional, has been one of variety, although the undertaking enjoyed one of the briefest periods of independent operation of any English line.
The railways diversity, besides adding interest to the story, has also been of assistance in its writing, enabling it to fall fairly easily into sections. I only hope that the result may go at least part of the way towards remedying its former neglect. There have been many difficulties to overcome and discrepancies to sort out, and I must extend my most grateful thanks to all those whose help made this history possible. A full list of acknowledgments appears at the end.
Introduction to Third Edition
In the summer of 1962 I was privileged to spend a day on the Cleobury Mortimer & Ditton Priors Light Railway, courtesy of the then owners, the Ministry of Defence (Admiralty). The outing was so fascinating and enjoyable that, with all the temerity of youth, I set about compiling the first edition of this short history of the line. Later the limitations of that edition became increasingly apparent, and although the second edition of 1978 enabled a few improvements to be made, a more extensive revision of the text has had to wait until now. In the intervening years some excellent material on this little railway has appeared in print, putting more flesh on the bones of the story. The purpose here is not to duplicate that contribution, but simply to enhance and tidy up the work done in 1962/3, and meet a continuing interest in this small book. At a few points some significant alterations to the text have seemed desirable, but the basic structure is much the same. It is hoped that the new postscript and appendices will also add fresh points of interest to the story of this isolated light railway which changed hands four times in a career lasting less than 60 years.
