The railroads played a crucial role in the building of America, and continued to be a part of the backdrop of everyday life until comparatively recent times. Yet although the steam locomotives that had provided the main form of motive power on most railroads well into the twentieth century had disappeared almost entirely from daily operations by the early 1960s, they continue to fascinate, evoking nostalgic memories in older folk, and strangely powerful emotions even in those born too late to remember the great days of steam first-hand.
CLASSIC STEAM charts the final decades of steam railroading in North America, from the late 1930s through to the early 1960s, in some 300 stunning black .and white and color photograhs. Every aspect of steam railroading operations is covered, from shortlines and narrow-gauge railroads to stations, grand "Limited" passenger trains, freight services, and much more. Produced in association with the Center for Railroad Photography & Art, Classic Steam features the work of some of the most highly acclaimed photographers of the era, and draws on the collections of leading museums and archives. In his supporting text, acclaimed writer and photographer John Gruber talks not only about the technical aspects of steam railroading-but also, more important, writes about the wider life of the railroad, and the lives and times of those who traveled and worked on them.
