Have you ever noticed how your eyes center on the tank cars in a passing freight? They stand out, those curved shapes amidst the rectangular forms of the other freight car types. How the extra stencilling on the sides and ends make for more fascinating reading. Tank cars have a special place in the annals of freight transportation, because they are the only ones that haul a cargo that's not in the solid state. They're also the only type of revenue freight car that has a preponderance of private owners over railroad owners; for example, in 1969 only 2.8% were owned by the common carrier roads.
It's amazing to think of the variety of materials they haul in the gaseous, liquid or semi-liquid form. Items that include gasses such as hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen; liquefied gases such as petroleum, chlorine, carbon dioxide etc; chemicals that include acids, antiknock compounds and polymers, alcohols etc; food products such as molasses, syrups, juices, fish and vegetable oils. The list seems endless. One speciality of the railroad tank car is the hauling of hazardous materials that are considered unsuitable for highway haulage. Unfortunately, we hear about this from time to time when a derailment involving these cars causes evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood.
As a result, tank car construction must meet very strict guidelines, more so than any other type of freight car. These requirements are mostly in the areas of insulation and lining and the type of valves employed to discharge cargo. Today, all tank cars are required to have shelf couplers. Tank cars range from 30 foot shorties up to lengths that rival passenger cars; from small loads of 4,500 gallons up to the present DOT maximum of 34,500 gallons.
Here then are a sampling of 180 tank cars that include a variety of types, sizes and paint schemes that might be applicable to your model building. Happy browsing!
