This volume represents an attempt to present in 1 a coherent form some of the visual records of a railroad enthusiast whose photographic skills emerged during the early years of dieselization in the nation's southeastern corner which, for present purposes, extends westward to the Mississippi River and northward to the states of Kentucky and Virginia. What the reader will not find here is systematic coverage of each railroad in the region, but rather a photographic sampler which reflects the author's interest in first-generation diesel power on all the region's lines - both large and small. Interwoven around the descriptions of locomotives and operations are brief historical sketches of some key rail routes the author observed at close range during this period.
The commentary follows a chronological format, emphasizing various parts of the south where the author lived or visited. To understand how this photo coverage began, one must remember the importance of an "extended family" during the 1940's and 1950's. My parents were from large close-knit families, and we often visited my grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins located in cities and towns scattered throughout the south. These trips allowed me, as a dedicated train watcher in the beginning and later as a neophyte photographer, to gain an appreciation of the wide variety of rail operations and equipment on display in my "home territory." I soon realized that there were many who excelled at still photos and roster analysis, but far fewer who went into the countryside and attempted to create images of railroads doing their everyday jobs. As a mature photographer I came to realize that this visualization must include trains working in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day and night.
To those younger readers who were not around to watch this great metamorphosis of America's railroads, I hope these pages will give you an impression of what it was like. And to you who were there, I trust that these images will kindle some fond memories of the beginning of the diesel era.
