There was a time in America when getting there was half the fun, and there was no better way of accomplishing this than to travel aboard one of America's great streamliners. Whether it was Union Pacific's storied City of San Francisco New York Central's posh 20th Century limited, or Wabash Railroads folksy Blue Bird streamlined passenger trains had a way of making the trip a little vacation unto itself.
It wasn't always that way of course. Long before streamliner emerged during Depression-era Amnia, countless passenger trains had already stitched together the Fabric of America. Many of them were great steam-powered limiteds with fast schedules, classy accommodations, and dining cars that offered fashionaback cuisine. But oftentimes train travel was smoky, din, and strenuous. As travelers became more sophisticated they desired even more-sophisticated conveyances. Streamliners were the next step.
Streamlining-the design premise that states that smooth lines, rounded contours, and simplified firms nuke for a friendlier, more-relaxed environment-had its roots in the 1920s. The concept caught on, and soon many aspects of life were benefiting from streamlining, which was being applied to just about everything from toasters and vacuum cleaners to automobiles and ships, and even to buildings. So why nor to passenger trains?
Thus in 1934 the Union Pacific Railroad and the Burlington Route took the first headlong plunge into streamlining, introducing two diminutive experimental streamliners. UPS link yellow M-10000 train and
Burlington's stainless-steel Zephyr 9900 barnstormed the country, bringing an air of excitement and optimism to a country in the grips of the most serious depression ever. The results went far beyond what the railroads ever expected. The public embraced the streamliner concept with fervor and returned to the rails in droves as more railroads introduced dazzling new speedsters. With the new trains came clever innovations and improved equipment. After World War 11 the introduction of new streamliners reached a new crescendo, and as the 1950s dawned, America boasted of some of the finest new passenger trains in the world.
Through generous text and more than 200 illustrations, Classic American Streamliners tells the streamliner story and rakes you aboard a wide range of different streamliners from UP's historic M-10000 train of 1934 to Santa Fe's esteemed Super Chief of 1937: from Pennsylvania Railroad's haute Broadway limited of 1938 to "America's Most Talked About Train?' the California Zephyr of 1949 and whose descendant was still nuking teaks across the continent in the 1990s.
