Twenty thousand Indians answered the call to arms when North and South went to war. Some linked their futures to the Union, others to the Confederacy, but all of them hoped their Civil War service would help save their people from annihilation as the American republic pushed farther west. Often forgotten by historians, these Indian soldiers got more-and less-than they expected from the war.

The earth tore open when the Petersburg mine exploded on July 30, 1864. As the smoke cleared, Indians of many tribes stepped to the rim of the resulting crater, and hurled themselves into a nightmare of pointless destruction. It was a painful metaphor of the overall experience of Indians in the Civil War.
