The model rail who likes the Circus, but doesn't want to model it in its entirety, might find the answer in the cars used to transport the performers, laborers and officials.
Modification to model passenger cars is easy. Bright coats of paint and decaling are the only requirements for pullmans, diners and observation cars. Combines can become gaudy advertising cars.
The older style of equipment: cars with wood sides and truss rods were quite common in the early (lays of the Circus train. Later on as the railroads received new, lightweight cars, the heavyweight steel cars replaced, were downgraded to work equipment or to the Circus.
After World War II, R hieing Brothers. Barnum & Bailey Combined Circus, purchased war-surplus hospital cars and converted them to living quarters for its personnel.
Photos on these pages should give the modeler some idea as to how the cars looked in Circus service. All photos (with the exception of those of the Royal American Shows) were obtained through the courtesy of the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, Wis. This was quite a task for the Museum's film room personnel, as it became apparent that very few photos were taken of passenger cars. Photographers in those days were more interested in the activity of the Big Top. Also, the trains were moved at night and once at destination, the passenger cars were shunted away on a remote side track, so that the personnel could relax and sleep without being disturbed by curious on-lookers.
