Public works are the result of much debate, conversation, controversy and effort before a single shovel of dirt is turned. Cincinnati Union Terminal (C.U.T.) was no exception. Thirty-five years of planning and almost four years of construction took place before the citizens of Cincinnati first beheld their ART DECO masterpiece.
This work tells of the rail transportation problem Cincinnati faced, in the latter part of the 19th century and how we ultimately addressed it some 35 years later. Late enough that its construction helped offset the effects of the Depression for many local families. So late, in fact, that the terminal's design was used as a basis for several modern airports.
From the dramatic earthworks of the complex to the artisans who brought the beauty to the building, we attempt to give you a taste of the scope of their work. Through more than 250 pictures, many of which have never before been published, we hope to give you the sense of the size of this project.
If you gain from this book an understanding of just what a marvel of art, architecture and technology the Cincinnati Union Terminal was-and still is-we have accomplished our purpose.
