THE CHURNET VALLEY RAILWAY
This year - 1999 - sees the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Churnet Valley line of the North Staffordshire Railway. With the present day Churnet Valley Railway plc making good progress in reconstructing the line between Cheddleton and Froghall, this is a timely account of a once thriving route which traversed some of Britain's most scenic countryside. The 27 miles from North Rode to Uttoxeter which constitute the Churnet Valley line, fed the tourist spots of Rudyard Lake and Alton Towers, and served the market town of Leek and smaller rural communities such as at Rushton, Consall, Cheddleton and Rocester, but was originally built to carry goods to and from the many industries which once inhabited the Valley, particularly around Froghall and Oakamoor.
The story begins with a look at the Churnet Valley before the arrival of the railway, showing the reasons why it was built and the transport infrastructure that existed previously. Various chapters then detail the history, development and eventual closure of the route, whilst the final chapter brings the story up to date with the efforts of the preservation society to reestablish part of the line, beginning from a base at Cheddleton in the 1970s. The distinctive scenery and architecture enjoyed by the line is covered by an extensive selection of maps and pictures in a long and detailed chapter which travels the length of the route. The many and varied services which used the line, particularly in the 1930s, are well documented and illustrated, as is the social life of the communities which used the Churnet Valley railway.
With a comprehensive and entertaining text, and illustrated with nearly 400 photographs, maps and plans, the majority of which have not previously been published, this major work will be a welcome addition to the shelves of railway and industrial historians, modellers and enthusiasts alike, as well as visitors to the preserved line who wish to know more about its origins and background.
