The Chili Line
This volume follows the narrow gauge collection of five books detailing the narrow gauge in the "circle route": Denver, Salida, Gunnison, Montrose, Durango, Alamosa back to Denver. The around-the-circle route had some ,variations, but seldom included the long branch to Santa Fe from Antonito. The Southwestern interest in the desert "atmosphere" (although a good portion of the area is in towering peaks) usually thought of by the tourist had not hit its stride sufficiently to "do Santa Fe." The AT&SF had capitalized on the Indian culture early on, with even a name train, "The Chief," being advertised. The 100-mileplus trip did not induce many to enjoy the rather ho-hum areas the train encountered traveling due south. The story depicts the tracks through northern New Mexico, recording by photograph the quaint villages and atmosphere encountered. To the rail buffs there has been a captivating interest in the chile operations and the equipment the D&RGW used. This book also delves into the line-side structures and some of the fascinating happenings on the fabulous Chili Line. If it had lasted through World War II, it would have possibly made a great tourist line diversion from Chama to Santa Fe
