Today hundreds of thousands of suburban Chicago commuters travel to and from work daily via sleek stainless steel trains powered by diesel-electric or straight electric power, with such names as METRA, RTA, and NICTD. Safe, convenient, and efficient commuter trains have helped make Chicago the great city it is, and has been for over a century.
Before today's public entities the steam railroads operated their own commuter trains, known as 'suburbans'. These trains, pulled by small steam locomotives, made suburban living and daily commuting possible even before the invention of the automobile, and many towns grew up around the railroads' suburban depots.
Some railroads had their own fleets of unique suburban tank locomotives; others used former mainline locomotives that gained second careers in suburban service. As small wooden cars were replaced by heavier cars and longer trains, the smaller locomotives were replaced by larger former mainline locomotives, themselves displaced by even larger ones. This pattern continued until the end of steam in the 1950's.
The photograph collection of Roy Campbell includes numerous examples of steam powered suburban trains and the specialized steam locomotives used to pull them. This book contains 169 photographs from this collection. Captions are provided as a place to start in examining and enjoying the photos. Where a photographer other than Campbell is known, that person is identified. While there is nothing in the collection to confirm this, there is ample indication that Mr. Campbell obtained some of these photos from prominent Chicago rail photographer A.W. Johnson, and we credit Mr. Johnson where this is due.
The editor wishes to acknowledge Ralph Wehlitz, Charles Stats, and Bob Janz for research assistance.
Coverage is organized beginning with the Illinois Central, generally credited with founding suburban service in 1856. The IC exits Chicago directly south parallel to the Indiana state line. As lines radiate from central Chicago like spokes, trains on these lines are examined successively in a clockwise direction around the city.
The railroads depicted here are all now parts of current Class I railroads. Their "fallen flag" heralds may still be trademarks belonging to one of these railroads; we use them for purposes of identification only. This is not an official publication.
