DVD: Chicago Streetcar Memories

Ask anyone who has ever ridden a modern Chicago streetcar what it was like, and they will tell you that is was unlike any other type of vehicle that one could ride in a city street. The cars seemed to glide down the street without the bumpy sensations found on a modern motor bus, trolley bus, or automobile. With their trucks hiding behind full skirts, they looked as though they were floating on air.
In the late 1930s, the Chicago Surface Lines brought the concept of the modem streetcar to the city on Madison Street. These cars were called PCC Cars because they had been conceived by a group of Electric Street Railway executives that was called the Presidents' Conference Committee (PCC). After the end of the Second World War, the Chicago Surface Lines purchased 600 more PCC cars with the thought that this large fleet of modern streetcars would serve the citizens of Chicago for many years to come.
Through photographs, we will take you on a journey covering the eight streetcar lines that were equipped with PCC cars by the Chicago Surface Lines and later the Chicago Transit Authority between 1936 and 1958.
