BIOGRAPHICAL.
'
HE expansion of any one of the principal railway enterprises of the United States, from its incipiency in narrow local conditions and significance, into a system of el
continental proportions is, in a large sense, commensurate with the development of those regions through which its pathways run. In the preparation of a circumstantial and thoroughly credible narrative of the growth of the main railroads of the West, no comprehensive and coherent records invite eager scrutiny; no railway archives replete with substantial data, and prolific of personal and material memoranda, gratify the vision; and no congenial pen has kept close pace with the marvelous unfolding. Into seventy years of promotion, construction and operation, have been crowded so much of creative thought, ardent purpose, intense effort and inventive research and achievement, that the potential characters (many of whom have departed this life), whose vital forces were absorbed in the accomplishment of great results in railroading, never paused to perpetuate in enduring annals the story of their labors. Their strenuous lives yielded no fresh hours of leisure to formulate the invaluable historic matter thus created into shape for enduring preservation, and the swift multiplication and extension of our railroads since 1845 have left a somewhat slender basis for accurate and specific narration. The record herein attempted, and it is believed measurably accomplished, traces the inception and growth of distinctively separate enterprises destined to become parts of a grand whole, and holds up the mirror of faithful portraiture to a succession of personages and events reaching through more than half a century.
Herein the publishers have earnestly endeavored to produce a work worthy of its subject, and one which will be deemed a valuable possession in the households of its subscribers. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Vice-President Hilon A. Parker, Secretary George H. Crosby, General Superintendent Andrew J. Hitt, Henry F. Royce, formerly general superintendent; George F. Wilson, superintendent of motive power and equipment; Elias H. Whited, depot ticket agent at Chicago, and others, for courtesies extended during the compilation. Much of the illustrative attraction of the book is attributable to the accommodating disposition of the management of the Brooks Locomotive Works of Dunkirk, New York, and the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. John C. Bonnell, of the advertising department of the Rock Island road, and Mr. Gustaf A. Akerlind, of the mechanical drafting department, have also contributed freely to the artistic embellishment of this volume.
The sketches of officials and employees which form the contents of Part II, and the likenesses of the subjects of some of these memoirs, constitute a most interesting feature of that portion of the work. The brief biographies,-essentially autobiographies,-of representative employees of the company, give the personal experiences of many who have advanced through grave difficulties and hazards to an enviable reputation in their calling. In their careers are conspicuously manifest those characteristics of constancy and courage which elevate and dignify our common nature,-self-continence, resolution, steadfastness and unswerving fidelity. Emulation of their virtues as depicted in these pages is an unfailing assurance of success and honor to those who may follow them in the same avocation.
