The Chicago & North Western Railway's locomotive ownership - through mergers, acquisitions, secondhand purchases, renumbering, and rebuild programs - does not permit a numbered-course to be followed. Many early locomotives on the roster are found in multiple number series. Locomotives are listed according to their original C&NW numbers.
