DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Chicago Great Western in Minnesota is the story of a railroad designed and built by Minnesotans to fight two of America's most powerful corporations, the Chicago & North Western and the Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul.
A. B. Stickney, the driving force behind the construction of the Great Western, believed that southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities were at the mercy of these two Chicago railroads and would remain so until he completed his railroad from St. Paul to Chicago. Motivated by high hopes and a desire to see everyone treated equally, Stickney pushed his railroad through to completion.
This is the story of Stickney's fight. The Great Western was always the little guy fighting the corporate giants. The fight for traffic was tough and the competition knew no bounds. For most of its life the Great Western was in financial difficulties. Nevertheless, the Chicago Great Western had tremendous staying power and remained a vital transportation company until the late 1960's.
The history of the Winona & Southwestern, the Duluth Red Wing & Southern, and the Minnesota Central, three railroads that would eventually become a part of the Chicago Great Western, is also included in this book.
