The history of the Chicago & North Western Railway's steam power and of the progress of steam over a period of more than a century would not be complete without reference to the year 1836. Two happenings eventful for the Chicago and North Western took place during that year. One was the granting by the Illinois legislature, on January 10, of a charter to the Chicago and Galena Union Railroad, authorizing the building of a railroad out into the praiiie towardsif not tothe Mississippi River near the lead mines near Galena, Illinois and Dubuque, Iowa. The second was the building by the Baldwin Locomotive Company of their steam locomotive No. 37 for the Utica and Schenectady Railroad, which railroad bestowed the No. 7 upon its latest acquisition.
