As you can readily see from the coverage of the Chicago & North Western in this book, my travels around the system eventually covered a much larger portion of the railroad than just the areas around the shops where I was doing work. The interest in the C&NW that generated the desire to travel the system extensively was a direct result of the fascinating motive power and operations on the railroad. While I still maintain that my favorite railroad is the one closest to wherever I may be at any particular time, I want the reader to know that the Chicago & North Western was something very special in the 1970s. I hope that this book will convey that message, and provide you with a nostalgic look back on a most interesting decade in the history of this colorful railroad.
