INTRODUCTION
Background
The training of Brakemen for the Chessie System Railroads has been an ongoing activity for many years. Traditionally, the training programs have been designed and implemented at the Division and local levels of the organization. The Division-based programs met the need for qualified Brakemen in their areas. However, the various training programs had different approaches and different emphases and covered different topical areas. As a result, we have had a lack of standardization of training for this position throughout the System.
The foundation of this new Brakeman training program has been constructed from segments of a number of the Divisional training programs, updated to reflect current rules, regulations and practices. In addition, new materials have been developed. The total program provides instruction and practice in basic Brakeman responsibilities. Safety is stressed throughout the program.
The new program is to be administered System-wide for the training and re-training of Brakemen. In this manner, we hope to achieve the standardization of instruction that is essential to ensure that all Brakemen are equally prepared to perform their duties.
