Chessie News Magazine Vol VII #2 2003 Spring Fruit Growers express Insulated Boxcar
The Chessie System Historical Society. On the cover, "Slow Clear" announced the crew of #396 just before they entered the northeast transfer in Fostoria, Ohio on May 11, 1985. This time period was the "one unit era" and even #396, a hot auto parts train, more often than not had only a single unit for power. It was an easy trip to Willard except for Republic Hill that ran from just east of Tiffin to Attica Jct., Ohio. The single unit would be down to a crawl heading up the hill, but the train would have just under the minimum tonnage that GP40-2 4101 could handle and slowly, but surely, they would roll into Willard.
