Hinton, West Virginia is a railroad town, created by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway as a terminal and locomotive change point when the line was built through southern West Virginia in the early 1870s.

Ideally situated near the junction of the Greenbrier and New rivers at a point which separated a relatively easy grade to the west from the Alleghany Mountain climb to the east, Hinton quickly grew as the C&O expanded its facilities, reaching a population of 8,000 in the 1920s.

Although the C&O was Hinton's major business it had many service businesses that supplied the needs of the C&O, its employees, and the New River coal fields to the west.
