About this book...
The Maintenance-of-Way motorcar was a fixture on all major railroads during the middle years of the 20th century. It was the natural outgrowth of the handcar by the application of a gasoline engine. On some railroads, they were called speeders; but on the C&O, they were called "motor cars." This book explains not only the motorcar service on the C&O, but its overall development nationally.

The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway History Series
The C&O History Series of Books is devoted to telling the story of various important aspects of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway that are too large to be covered in a magazine article but too small for a full-sized hardbound book. The Series consists of 64 and 80-page softbound books that treat subjects such as: steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and freight cars, structures, depots, towers, signals, operations, personalities, histories of subdivisions or cities and terminals, and a wide variety of additional subjects. This is the eleventh issue, C&O Maintenance-of-Way Motor Cars.
