Chesapeake Circle
DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
THE STORY OF CHESAPEAKE BAY is as extensive as the Bay itself, and the tales to be told as varied as its moods. In this sequel to his first book, This Was Chesapeake Bay, Robert Burgess has visualized the Chesapeake as a great, elliptical circle beginning at Baltimore, its chief port, and proceeding to the head of the Bay, down the Eastern Shore, through Capes Henry and Charles, and back up the Western Shore to the point of origin. The settings of these accounts range in temper from hurricane violence to the peace of a hidden cove; in place, from the open sea to the sailmaker's loft; in subject, from the coffee, coal and pineapple trades to life on a buoy tender.
With a true sense of history, Mr. Burgess years ago began recording by word and by photograph the physical features and professions steadily passing from the Chesapeake scene; hence the special emphasis here on the Bay's commerce and craftsmen. These people and events, commonplace and overlooked by
most contemporary observers, stand out today as significant parts of the Chesapeake heritage. All the stories relate to some aspect of Bay life, yet each stands independent, complete in itself, and the reader can start and stop with any story without thought of breaking continuity. Topics covered include:
Tales and voyages of schooners, sloops, barks and clipper ships-Commercial sailing craft race-Convict ship in Baltimore-Ships' graveyards-Woman's life at sea- Baltimore's great steamboat strike -Chesapeake & Delaware Canal-Interdependence of rail and water in Chesapeake transportation-Steamboats and steam-boating on the Bay and its rivers-Soft-shell clamming-Oyster dredgers-Wenona craftsmen, trail-board carver and sail-makers-Excerpts and synopses of recently discovered logs and journals-Cape Charles to Norfolk ferry-River ferries-Lightships, lighthouses and other aids to navigation-Naval history-Hurricane tragedies at sea-Christening-bottle netting makers-History on the river's bottom-Veteran men of the Bay-Chesapeake Bay Bridge -The Bay liners-Whereabouts of old schooners and famous log canoe Flying Cloud, and many other significant Chesapeake incidents.
Following these more than 50 true accounts of Bay lore is a lazarette containing nostalgia-stirring photographs, each of which tells a story in itself.
In most instances the accounts in this companion volume to This Was Chesapeake Bay are longer. How- ever, they are not padded out; there is just more story to tell. Every essay is fully and handsomely illustrated by photographs from the author's collection and other sources. Thoroughly indexed, Chesapeake Circle is also a valuable addition to reference works concerning the Bay and its history.
All readers-Bayman or tourist, historian or pleasure--seeker-who have known the spell of its salty expanse, the character of its creekside towns, and the
magic of words like Mobjack Bay will want this latest Chesapeake volume. The author's style, inspired by the phrase "An honest tale, plainly told, speeds best,"
or should be a welcome relief to readers burdened with the pedantic tone of many current writers. Chesapeake Circle is the perfect book to both own and give.
