The Channel Tunnel shuttles are the world's largest trains. Almost 800m long, 2600 tonnes in weight, they traverse the Channel at speeds of up to 140 km/h, 24 hours a day, 52 weeks a year.
This unique book is the official record of all the dedicated Tunnel rolling stock. Expert railway writers Peter Semmens and Yves Machefert-Tassin provide a fascinating insight into the specification, design, equipment and operation of the shuttle locomotives and their remarkable wagons, specially designed to carry freight and passenger vehicles between Britain and France.
The international through-services operated via the Tunnel are also fully described.
Additional chapters deal with the infrastructure of the Tunnel itself (the world's longest undersea tunnel), together with the sophisticated Equipment it contains: track, drainage, ventilation, electric traction supply. The signalling and communications systems and stock servicing and maintenance are also described.
Supported by numerous specially commissioned photographs, drawings, plans and diagrams, this book reveals the astonishing complexity of the arming and operation of the Channel Tunnel.
