INTRODUCTION
Incorporated in 1852, the Grand Trunk Railways was conceived to build a main route from Montreal to Toronto and to the east of Montreal two routes, one the year round route to the port of Portland, ME and the other to Halifax. In 1859, it opened the Victoria Bridge across the St. Lawrence to Montreal. To the west, the GT reached Chicago in 1880 and later opened the St. Clair Tunnel in 1890 for an all rail route across Michigan.
In 1882, the Grand Trunk absorbed the Great Western, which had opened in 1854 a route from Niagara Falls through Hamilton to Windsor. Incorporated in 1903, the Grand Trunk Pacific (a subsidiary of the Grand Trunk) built a main line at a very high cost, from Winnipeg to the Pacific opening in 1914. When the Grand Trunk Pacific went into receivership in 1919, the Canadian government took possession of the Grand Trunk and Grand Trunk Pacific on May 21, 1920, and placed it under the Canadian National control in 1920. The Canadian National Railway had been incorporated on June 6, 1919, by combining the Canadian Northern and Canadian Government railways. At the time, Grand Trunk's US lines were split into the Grand Trunk Western and Grand Trunk (New England).
The Central Vermont Railway was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway, a 421-mile line from Canada to New London, CT. The Grand Trunk had purchased Central Vermont stock in the 1880s to fend off Canadian Pacific's expansion into New England.
During 1873 and 1874, the Grand Trunk (of New England) predecessor switched from 5-foot 6-inch gauge to Standard gauge. In 1902 under the Grand Trunk, the road built a 15-stall roundhouse at East Deering (Portland) and a year later a beautiful Victorian-style stone station at Portland. To improve its export grain business, the GT had a 175-foot high by 300x 101 foot grain elevator built at Portland
known as "Portland Elevator No. 1." A 20-stall roundhouse and shop facility was located at Island Pond, VT. Also at Island Pond was a 2,500-ton capacity ice-house for the refrigeration of perishables. The daily except-Sunday passenger trains #16 and 17 operated between Montreal and Portland until April 2, 1960, but later continued from June to Labor Day on Saturday and Sunday only during summers. In March 1966, the beautiful Grand Trunk station at Portland was demolished to avoid taxes.
Steam power for the Grand Trunk included 3400-series Mikados built in 1913, and 3700-series USRA 2-8-2s in 1918. Alco built 0-6-0 switchers #7527-7531 in 1919 and Lima built 0-6-0 #7475 in 1920, all replaced by diesel units during the 1954-1956 period. Canadian National furnished steam power for passenger trains #16 & 17, Pacific's during the winter and Mountain type during the heavy summer traffic season. CNR #5314 (a 4-6-2) pulled the last regularly-scheduled steam passenger train (Train #17) from Portland to Island Pond on June 15, 1956.
In 1950, the Central Vermont's operating ratio was 79% with 48-steam locomotives, three diesel switchers and 1265 freight cars rostered. The steam roster included 230-series 4-6-2s, 387-series 0-6-0s, 400-series 2-8-0s, 500-series 0-8-0s, 600-series 4-8-2s (built in 1927), 700-series 210-4s (built in 1927), and diesel S-2 units #7917-7919 built by Alco at the start of World War II in December 1941.  On March 29, 1957, CNR 4-8-4 #6208 hauled the last scheduled steam passenger run on the CV, the MONTREALER from White River Jct. to Montreal. CV's three Montreal-Boston freight traffic routes included interchange with the Boston & Maine at White River Junction, the Boston & Albany at Palmer, MA and the New Haven at Willimantic, CT. Also freight cars moved from Montreal to New York City via the New Haven Railroad interchange at New London.
