This book is dedicated to the men and women who were employed by the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey (CNJ), to their families, and to their customers.
For 100 years the employees of the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey have considered themselves part of the railroad family. In 1903 a small group of long time employees (hence the word Veteran) formed the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey Veteran Employees Association. It was the first such employee association in the nation and today has over 400 members.
The histories of both the Association and the railroad are so closely related that it would be impracticable to tell the story of the Association without telling the story of the railroad. While the Association was formed nearly a century after the railroad's start, each had its "firsts". In some ways they even resembled one another, particularly in their climb from a small, modest beginning to a period of exciting, spectacular growth.
This history has been written to commemorate the 100' anniversary of the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey Veteran Employees Association. Much of it has been extracted from a book being written on the history of the CNJ by the author, who reserves all rights for subsequent use.
The history of the first 50 years of Veterans Association could not have been written without the efforts of the late Albert Whiteford who chronicled in great detail the Association's activities from 1903 until 1949. Also, special recognition is given to the late Alfred M. Jenico who chronicled much of the Association's history during the 1950's through the 1970's and to Nathan W. James who, with a now unknown CNJ consultant, recorded the behind the scenes trials and tribulations of the CNJ during its final years.
The Central Railroad Company of New Jersey ceased railroad operations at midnight on March 31, 1976. The following day its operation, along with those of several other railroads in the northeastern United States, was taken over by the Consolidated Rail Corporation, commonly known as Conrail.
