Throughout the long existence of the Great Western Railway-the longest of any British railway-its mainline express locomotives, each class in its generation, have been universally recognised as outstanding, both as regards dignity of appearance and excellence of performance. Since 1923, the `Castles', together with the 'Kings' from 1927, served the Great Western Railway until the end of that railway as a separate entity in 1948, and, for fifteen years after that, continued to handle all the express passenger traffic of the line with outstanding reliability and competence.
The publication of this collection of pictures endeavours to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of the 'Castles' and 'Kings'. It is one thing to project the idea of an album of this nature, and quite another to actively take part in its compilation.
