The Cass Collection Volume 1 By John Killoran

photographic memoirs of the first twenty years 1961-1981 on West Virginias famed Cass Scenic Railraod 52 pages
Those of us who worked to save Cass 22 years ago ad no real feeling that history was being made. As these photographs were made, I had no expectation that they would become the eventual pictorial record of the Cass Scenic Railroad. The hundreds of negatives that did not become part of this "sampler" of Cass will, I hope, find their way into a complete history of logging on Cheat Mountain.
You will find, in these pages, the spirit and feeling of those first 20 exciting years. If there's a lesson to be learned from compiling this book it is a simple one. Today's routine experiences (be they on film or written) become tomorrow's history. The little railroad that hauled logs for 60 years never was assured of perpetuity until it became a strange state park - 11 miles long and 50 feet wide.
The fondest hope I have is that this work could note the contributions of dozens of persons, living and dead, who have made Cass "happen". Without them this American treasure would be a fading memory ... John Killoran, Hurricane, WV - 1982.
