RAILWAYS had their beginning in England as nothing more than planked wagon ruts in the roads from the Newcastle mines to the sea. By the time the idea reached America, probably along with a shipload of coal, it had had the benefit of improvements. And so when Gridley Bryant played the pioneer here in 1826 he built real rails with fine pine timber and faced them with bar iron.
This first railway of the very new republic covered the three miles between Mr. Bryant's granite quarries near Quincy, Mass., and the Neponset River. Horses hauled the cars, which were nothing more than wagons, from the river to the quarries. The return trip was left largely to gravity and the proper grade. The wagons, loaded with granite for the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston, rolled down to the river at a speed of four and a half miles an hour. The horses, not being fools, rode with them.
