FOREWORD
The tale about to be unfolded relates one sequence of the horrifying events which took place during a black and terrifying night early in the summer of 1921 at Pueblo, Colorado. This story comprises Chapter V of a 165-page volume entitled, The Arkansas River Flood-June, 1921, all the explanatory information which follows being extracted from this same work.
The report, dated November 24, 1921, was prepared by Arthur 0. Ridgway, then Assistant Chief Engineer of what is now the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, for the management of the company. It covers in infinite detail the history and description of the river basin and previous floods and channels of that mighty Southeastern Colorado stream together with a narrative of the events which transpired, as completely as they could be reconstructed, on that tragic night.
Publication of these data by the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club is made possible through the friendly interest and courtesy of Mr. John Ayer, Jr., Chief Engineer, and Mr. W. A. Hansen, Assistant to the Chief Engineer of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Company at Denver, Colorado, in whose files this information reposes. The cooperation of these two gentlemen, and of the railroad company itself, is gratefully acknowledged.
All of the principal story, and with hut very minor changes all the following explanatory material, is recorded in the exact wording and phrasing of the author-Arthur Osbourne Ridgway-one of four outstanding members
