ON THE BACK COVER
The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, a strategic naval action in the bitter Guadalcanal Campaign, was history's fourth carrier-versus-carrier naval battle. Though technically a Japanese victory, this battle proved to be the Empire of Japan's last serious attempt to win the Pacific War by means of an all-out carrier-based, naval aviation confrontation. Of the four Japanese aircraft carriers that fought the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, only one survived the war.
While the Imperial Japanese Navy could claim victory as American naval forces retreated from the field of battle, strategically the U.S. Navy won at Santa Cruz by achieving its goal of holding the line for the beleaguered Marines on Guadalcanal and buying time for the build-up of American naval strength that would eventually crush the Japanese fleet.
As was the case with its companion book, Carrier Clash: The Invasion of Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, August 1942, this book is based upon both American and Japanese battle reports as well as the recollections of many airmen and seamen who took part.
"Hammel is as adept at conveying the terrors of fighting fire on a ship . . . as he is at providing concise evaluations of top commanders. Official histories apart, [Carrier Clash and Carrier Strike are] the most thorough appreciation yet of Guadalcanal's turning-point carrier battles; praiseworthy."Kirkus Reviews
