North Carolina Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley System
PREFACE
Perhaps no other railroad has ever had a name that described its colorful route as succinctly as the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railway. The marque vividly conjures visions of the swampy, lush coastline overlooking the lapping waves of the Graveyard of the Atlantic, while at the same time highlighting the ancient nooks and crannies of the storied Appalachians. The Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley - certainly the quintessential name for a trans-North Carolina railroad.
Though dead and buried since the last years of the nineteenth century, the spirit of this historical line refuses to fade away. This book is a reprint of the milestone publication that the CF&YV published in 1889 to attract primarily industry, as opposed to tourists, to the region that the line served. It was a ground-breaking
marketing concept, one that included a quality hardcover book printed in a 4 color cover that bound spectacular lithographs accompanied by a lengthy, hugely informing text. The idea of attracting factories to the underdeveloped North Carolina resources, instead of tourists to the coast or mountains, was nearly as revolutionary to the economy of the state as the introduction of railroads themselves!
Though expensive to produce for the era, the book's concept was validated a few years later by a rival of the Cape Fear &Yadkin Valley. In 1898, the Southern Railway published its answer to the Cape Fear book with its own landmark book "The Empire of the South." Naturally, this new book borrowed wildly from the basic premise and format of the Cape Fear's. And during the coming decades, the Southern  Railway took the concept of recruiting industry to its territory to completely new heights in its bid to become the most successful railroad of the twentieth century.
The founders and builders of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley, while not sharing the same contemporary success of their rivals, have nevertheless been proven over time for their visionary concepts and marketing prowess. Though the line was sold in 1899 and split in half by two other railroads, its history as a unique Carolina railroad still shines brightly. This reprint (of which there are only three known original copies) faithfully reproduces the content of the original and stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railway, as do the economic life-breathing portions of the railroad that exist to this day. This reprint of the book is copied down to its original errors (ie, Southern Pacific should read South Carolina Pacific on p. 10), and the stray "dots" that accompany many of the pages reflect original printing and paper imperfections. Only the "newer" photographs and following chapter are added to the original publication.
