The reader of this book will find scarcely less remarkable than did Lady Barker the story of how so tiny a community assumed so massive a financial commitment, how it was lashed by the financial blizzards of the 1860s, and how, after the province's uncritical adoption of English railway standards and conventions, the colony found the way towards a New Zealand criterion of railway practice.
The problem facing the Canterbury of the 'fifties was how best to remove the impediment that the hills offered to transport from the sea to the hinterland. It was William Sefton Moorhouse who had the discernment to see that only a railway could overcome so great an obstacle; indeed, that great ends demanded massive means. It was his Yorkshireman's energy and perseverance that nerved the province to assume so daunting an undertaking. What he achieved was to prepare Canterbury for the expansion of the Vogel era.
The story of Canterbury Railways is a story modest in dimensions of space and time, exhibiting in microcosm the character of human aspiration. In word and picture, the story comes to life in these pages.
