Americans now take for granted rapid and convenient transportation of passengers and goods by air, rail, and water. One hundred and twenty-five years ago, however, Americans traveled slowly and uncomfortably aboard canalboats and crude railroad cars; farm products and manufactured goods moved slowly with frequent delays to and from the cities.
The following publication, outlining that phase of transportation in the United States, originally appeared as chapter 11 of YOUNG AMERICA, 1830-1840, by Robert E. Riegel. The University of Oklahoma Press published the volume in 1949. The publisher has graciously granted permission to reprint.
The Boards and the Staff of the Public Library of Fort Wayne and Allen County present this account in the hope that it will prove interesting and informative to Library patrons.
