Welcome Aboard!
With so few Canadian trains left to actually ride, this series of books is meant to serve as substitute entertainment. Hopefully, this issue will only be the first of many armchair excursions we will make together - all under the heading of "Canadian Railway Scenes".
The actual work on this book is being done aboard retired C.P.R. caboose No. 436788, built in 1922. This is my writing office and studio. Parked on a piece of track next to it is a similar caboose, owned by my wife, Beverly, and used as her book publishing office. The kids have another caboose nearby.
This old caboose has an atmosphere that often makes me think about the railway scenes it took part in. Sometimes I wish for a video machine able to recall all that has passed outside these windows. There would be fast, double-headed mainline freights, as well as slow mixed trains passing through various Canadian towns and country places. There would be thirsty steam locomotives, stopping at wooden water tanks. Climbing on and off the steps outside would be experienced, old conductors, as well as young brakemen returned from two world wars. Scenes of the past, yes, but I also think of them as scenes that show us how we have arrived in the present.
The second issue of this series features the Canadian Pacific Railway's mainline through the spectacular Rockies and Selkirks. Included are scenes of Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Field, Golden, Roger's Pass, Glacier, and Revelstoke. Contributions for future issues are welcome, especially quality photo stories, and photos that tell stories. Activities along the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways will predominate, but other interesting rail subjects will also be covered. Since our emphasis is on railway scenes, we leave the technicalities of machinery and operations to those more qualified.
