Like its American counterparts in the latter half of the 19th century, the Canadian Pacific Railway approached the Rocky Mountains with the trepidation and unease worthy of such an implacable obstacle. Anyone who has witnessed the immensity of these limestone behemoths climbing abruptly 10,000 ft. from the plains can attest to their impenetrable form. To construct a mainline railroad across them was a task that consumed men's lives, enormous expense, and the best engineering. With fortitude and determination, however, Canadian Pacific was up to the task. It threw a single track main line up and over the mountain range, completing a transcontinental route by 1886.
Immediately after the great barrier was pierced and daily operation started, new work was begun to upgrade and otherwise improve the more expedient "temporary" work carried out during construction. Even larger capital improvements began after the turn of the 20th century. The most well-known - the Spiral Tunnels in 1909 and Connaught Tunnel in 1916 - reduced high summits and alleviated four percent grades. Nevertheless, there was only so much that could be done, and since then the route through the Rockies and the mountain ranges to the west continued to demand special handling and larger motive power than that of the CP trains that ran east of Calgary on the Great Plains of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
