Volume One of "Canadian Pacific in the Rockies" was produced because it was thought that there was a need for a pictorial review of the mountain section of Canada's senior transcontinental railway and happily this has proven to be the case. The first printing rapidly sold out, the second printing is now down to a few remaining copies and currently our most pressing problem is deciding whether to order a third printing.
The most gratifying aspect of producing Volume One was that no adverse criticism was received and many purchasers wrote stating how much they enjoyed the work. We hope that everyone will be equally pleased with Volume Two which retains the format of the original book while covering different aspects of Canadian Pacific's operations west of Calgary. Several comments were received suggesting that a longer work would have been preferred but while we can appreciate this suggestion, an enlarged book would mean a higher price and we are committed to publishing low cost, high quality products. We are thus publishing Volume Two for the same price as our first work even though our costs have risen considerably since we first decided to enter this field. Hopefully, the increased scope of the captions will, at least, partially alleviate our inability to comply with these suggestions.
A large number of letters asking for more photographs of diesel-electric locomotives was received and this suggestion would have been followed if we had not received an almost equally large number of requests for a "steam only" work. Actually it would have been far easier to increase the size of the diesel content as our files have many more suitable photographs of diesels than steam locomotives and it is hoped that steam enthusiasts will not be too annoyed with the inclusion of an additional photograph showing non-steam power in operation. Although I am a steam enthusiast myself, it is recognized that the diesel-electric locomotive quite literally saved the railroad industry throughout the world, and I enjoy watching and reading about the diesel-electric in operation. Anyone who has seen and heard 12 "growlers" hauling 11,000 tons of coal between Rogers and Stoney Creek up the eastern slope of the Selkirks will understand the claim that the diesel-electric has a certain ''something".
