North America's first true transcontinental railway (its tracks directly linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans before the turn of the 20th century), the Canadian Pacific was opened to through traffic in 1885. Built for the dual purpose of linking the westernmost province of British Columbia with what was then the rest of Canada and preventing incursions from U.S. intereststhus honoring a pledge made by Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonaldthe Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) offered far greater promise in the eyes of its builders and financial backers. Surveying and construction of the railway had begun under federal government auspices, guided by the eminent.
