A railway as large as Canadian National, and with such a diverse background and history, is in many ways a difficult railway to write about. Individual volumes can be written about not only the principal subsidiaries of today (Grand Trunk Western, Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific and Central Vermont) but also the original component railways of Canadian National.
Therefore the purpose of this volume was to examine the services provided by the CN System from 1919 to 1975. Indeed this author recognizes that this is no small task, and even that history cannot be contained in a volume this size. Therefore the various types of train service are high lighted both historically from 1919 to 1975 and geographically from Newfoundland to British Columbia. As with Canadian Pacific Railway, published by Superior Publishing Company in 1974, this book is not a political or economic history.
In order to accomplish the purpose briefly described above, the author has compartmentized the book into several sections. The first chapter contains a brief description of the development of Canadian National Railways. The next three chapters cover the passenger train services including the suburban districts and the Super Continental. The next three chapters look at the freight and mixed train services plus a closer look at the iron ore and grain traffic.
The next three chapters cover different aspects of CN service including the electric interurban routes, the narrow gauge route in Newfoundland and the biggest most recent railway construction project in North America in recent years, the Great Slave Lake Railway.
Following that comes the important US subsidiaries and finally a brief overview of other CN operations throughout Canada.
Canadian National Railways has been absolutely essential to the economies of Canada and the United States. The Federal Government of Canada recognized this during the period from 1910 to 1923 when CN was slowing being organized. The Government had the wisdom and understanding to realize that without a railway certain territories would never be able to develop. It was a situation where the Government had to take action or possibly let many route miles of railway die that were critically needed.
CN is now over 50 years young. It is obvious that many of the right decisions were made because her efficiency and ability to serve the shipping and traveling public have improved substantially over the years. Indeed it could be said that the last five years from 1970 to 1975 have been among the most exciting of CN's history. The next half of this decade promises to be even more exciting as expanding traffic levels dictate new trackage and train service concepts. The Research and Development Department is playing a key role in these new developments. A second volume needs to be written describing this most exciting era of all on Canadian National Railways.
