About the Book
When I visited Ontario Northland's yard at Englehart, Ontario, on 10 September 1965, little did I suspect that I would become captivated by the discovery of some hopper cars labelled CANADA SOUTHERN. I took some photographs and began wondering about this railway, but at the time I was a student en route back to university following work in the "clay belt," and I had other, more pressing concerns.
Over a period of several years I searched out bits of information, but bits they remained. Later I began to search in earnest; I became like a detective on a challenging case. I was soon hooked. The trail would take me over virtually every mile of the Canada Southern Railway (CSR) line in Ontario. I would visit or contact archives, libraries and museums in Canada and the United States, both along the CSR route and well removed from it. Hours and miles passed. I met many people who shared generously of their time and treasures. Without such people this book would not only have been significantly different, it would never have been finished.
The scope of this work ranges from the railway's humble beginnings in post-Confederation Ontario in 1868 to the bitter, protracted battles about the line's future before the Canadian Transport Commission in the 1980s. The railway was born at a time when railway fever convinced ill-prepared backers that money could be made out of nerve and dreams. The railway almost died at more recent time, a victim of the struggle of mega-railways whose well-prepared backers were equally convinced that they could make money out of nerve alone.
