California Trolleys In Color Volume 2: San Francisco covers San Francisco's enduring streetcar fleet. It is not about the city's world-famous Cable Cars. Webster's New World Dictionary describes a trolley car as "a streetcar powered from an overhead wire by means of a trolley". In addition, a streetcar is described as "a car on rails for public transportation along the streets". Webster's further states that a trolley "is a grooved wheel at the end of a pole that transmits an electric current from an overhead wire to a streetcar". In Muni's case, it actually replaced all the trolley wheels on its cars with a carbon-insert shoe in early 1952 for better contact with the wire, following the lead of other systems.
