The Chicago City Railway notices are from the collection of Barney Neuberger. The two West Chicago grip car drawings are contributed by the Chicago Transit Authority.

FOREWORD
When the eminent mountain climber George Leigh Mallory was asked why he had spent years in an effort to climb Mount Everest, he made the classic reply "Because it is there." Similarly, I should justify this study on the ground that the cable system isn't there. But it once was, and I feel that it should be described in as much detail as possible before it fades entirely from the memories of those living. I have endeavored to restrict myself to a description of the physical properties of the cable system, a chronicle of its development and demise, and a discussion of the economics of the rival forms of transit during the emergence of the electric car. I have endeavored to avoid any prolonged excursion into the nature of life in Chicago during the cable era or any detailed history of the three companies involved.
