Here's a book that pays homage to the great fleet of Floridaliners-trains that schlepped shivering Yankees, seeking relief from winter's cold blasts, down the Atlantic coast to Florida, the Sunshine State.
The travel choices these folks had was nothing short of amazing. Would it be Seaboard Air Line's posh, all-Pullman Orange Blossom Special or Atlantic Coast Line's adventuresome Havana Special? Or would Seaboard's Silver Star be preferred because of its morning arrival at Miami, or Coast Line and Florida East Coast's Florida Special because of its luxury and exclusivity-and novel Recreation Car?
Two trains in particular inspired a new boom in Northeast-Florida rail travel that began just prior to World War II, Seaboard's Silver Meteor, introduced in February 1939, and, later that year, ACL/FEC's Champion. What in both cases began as a modest seven-car all-coach streamliner turned into a whole fleet of revitalized, modernized and streamlined trains and services, all up and down the East Coast.
This book focuses on the events surrounding those two streamliners and their brethren, but don't let its title fool you. The pre-streamliner era Florida fleet gets its due, and the later heavyweight companion trains of the streamliners are covered as well. And, aside from the coverage of the trains themselves, there is careful documentation of the rolling stock that served the millions of Florida-bound passengers up to the start of Amtrak on May 1, 1971. After all, this is a book for passenger-car historians as well as the passenger-train aficionado.
Also, BY STREAMLINER, NEW YORK TO FLORIDA pays tribute to the railroads themselves who participated in the ongoing migration of north-south travelers. Coast Line, Florida East Coast and Seaboard are primary stars of this show, but readers will also gain insight on how the mighty Pennsylvania was critical to Northeast-Florida operations, as was the little railroad with the big name: Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac.
So, if the weather outside is frightful, but it's going to be a while before you can book passage on the next train to Florida, pull your chair along the fireplace and settle down with the next best thing to a real train trip to the seductive, tropical climes of the Sunshine State: BY STREAMLINER, NEW YORK TO FLORIDA.
