Introduction
For some rail enthusiasts, collecting places is as natural as collecting things. We find visiting the historical places, especially those of railroad history, as rewarding as adding a piece to our collection at home. Tracking down names on the Northern Pacific timetables has been an outgrowth of being raised in Montana and having an interest in thriving places which have long since become ghost towns. That is what led us east from Butte, Montana, along the Northern Pacific tracks to Welch.
The abandoned granite quarry at Welch is spectacular. Sitting atop the Boulder batholith, just over the continental divide from Butte, its exposed layers alternate with stands of aspen and fir. Ties still line the creek bed where quarry men diverted the water long enough for the trains to reach the upper loading platform. Among the granite remains of power plant and shop buildings linger clues to the people who used to live and work there: shards of purple glass, lengths of chain and cable, even tinware with "NPRR" markings. For us it presents the ideal combination of breathtaking scenery, abandoned mining camp, and Montana history as it was defined by the railroads.
