The Burlington Route of the 1950s, with a combined mileage of 10,918 miles, was a major "granger" railroad system which operated under the slogan "Everywhere West." At the end of 1953, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy rostered 340 steam locomotives and 571 diesel-electric units. During that year steam power had performed 17.7 percent of the freight gross ton miles, 1.8 percent of passenger train car miles and 19.5 percent of yard switching hours. The subsidiary Colorado & Southern-Fort Worth & Denver lines owned 79 steam engines and 61 diesel units.
The Burlington was recognized as the operator of the first diesel-powered lightweight passenger train with the purchase of the "Pioneer Zephyr" in 1934. The "Zephyr" fleet was rapidly expanded in the pre-World War II era. CB&Q was also an early user of diesel-electric switching units, three having been acquired in 1933. The Burlington tested Electro-Motive 103, the 5,400 h.p. FT freight diesel, in 1940. That same year the last of fifteen 05A class 4-8-4s were completed at the West Burlington shop.
Although the CB&Q had no need for additional
freight power to handle 31 million tons of freight traffic in 1940, by 1942 this tonnage had increased to 49 million tons. The War Production Board authorized 16 FTs in 1943, for delivery in 1944, as World War II freight tonnage peaked at 57 million tons. Beginning in 1946, additional F series freight locomotives were acquired.
A program to dieselize passenger service began in 1945 and was completed September 26, 1952, when the last 4-6-2s assigned to Chicago-Aurora suburban service were replaced. GP7 road switchers arrived in 1951 and the Casper Division was the first to be fully dieselized. By the end of 1953 steam facilities were maintained between Chicago-Denver, Aurora-St. Paul, Galesburg-Metropolis, Ill., and Lincoln-Alliance. General repairs to steam were handled at the North Denver shop.
