The Aurora Car Shops built the nation's first stainless-steel Vista Dome Chair Car, and the Burlington placed it in experimental service on July 23, 1945, in the northbound Afternoon Zephyr's consist from Chicago to Minneapolis. It was primarily assigned to the Twin Zephyrs, but it appeared in the consists of several of the other Zephyrs, the Exposition Flyer, and other passenger trains throughout the system. During various trips in the Exposition Flyer's consist, this innovative car traveled through between Chicago and Oakland, giving its passengers unrivaled daytime views of the Rocky Mountains and the Feather River Canyon. This car, which had been built originally as the SILVER ALCHEMY, was renamed SILVER DOME after the Aurora Shops had rebuilt it into this Vista Dome Chair Car. Another stainless-steel chair car was rebuilt during 1948 as a Vista Dome Chair Car by the Aurora Shops, but it retained its original name, SILVER CASTLE. This second dome car was rebuilt, when it became apparent that the Vista Dome Concept was much more popular with the traveling public than at first anticipated. The Burlington decided to rebuild this car, even though it had already had the Budd-built Vista Dome Twin Zephyrs in service. It was considerably more economical than it would have been to purchased a new Vista Dome Chair Car from the Budd Car Company.
