In Volume 2, we'll examine Alco's locomotive catalog  first-and second-generation models. Alco stronghold Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway operated several models and contributed heavily to the merged company's Alco fleet. Northern Pacific also contributed, but to a lesser extent. Almost a dozen former SP&S Alco FA1 cab units roamed the Pacific Northwest early in the merger. Four were originally owned by Great Northern, which sold them to SP&S in the 1950s. A single 1600hp FA2, a former SP&S unit, was also owned by the company. The familiar Alco roadswitchers, virtually everywhere in the 1970s, were also an ingredient in the BN roster. Northern Pacific brought a half-dozen 1600hp RS3s, while SP&S brought three 1500hp RS2s and 29 1600hp RS3s. The Alco roadswitchers were predominately kept on the former SP&S lines, but like any motive power, occasionally roamed to remote locations. (The strangest locale for many of the Alco RS units was a 1976-77 era lease by Conrail. The units worked in the Conway-Youngstown-Cleveland area, providing service in their twilight years.) A larger and later model Alco roadswitcher, the RS11, also populated the BN roster. Eighteen of the 1800hp units came from Northern Pacific. All the second-generation Alco power on the BN came courtesy of SP&S. Built by Alco Products, the Century-series models C-415, C-424, C-425, and C-636 were all owned by the SP&S prior to the merger.
