The Burlington Northern Railroad was formed on March 2, 1970 - a union of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway companies. On April 17, 1980, the 4,547-mile St. Louis - San Francisco Railway (Frisco or SLSF) was included in the system, although formal inclusion of the Frisco was delayed by court actions until 3:11pm November 21, 1980. The master renumbering plan was devised well ahead of the merger, resulting in most of the locomotive fleet quickly receiving BN reporting marks and new numbers. Repainting of the fleet into the familiar green and white was not as rapid. Many locomotives, especially the newer models roamed the system for several years in the colors of their former owners.
